GEOFF LAWTON is the Director of The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia . He has been invited by governments, NGOs, businesses and communities around the world to teach, restore damaged ecosystems and do sustainable design projects. He brings a wealth of first hand knowledge to his courses. This is a unique opportunity to experience this distinguished and inspiring teacher.

ETHAN ROLAND is a Hudson Valley native who teaches permaculture and designs food forests across the Northeast. Ethan has been instrumental in creating a permaculture community in the Hudson Valley and supporting permaculture events and projects throughout the northeastern states. Ethan brings integrity and enormous positive energy to his work.

The course will begin at 9:00AM , Monday, April 30 and end in the evening, Saturday, May 12, 2007 [72 Hours]

Important Information about this course

The course is a partnership between the Permaculture Research Institute A ustralia , Green Phoenix Permaculture, and the Epworth Camp and Retreat Center .

The Permaculture Design Course provides an overview of sustainable living systems in a variety of landscapes and climates. Permaculture design principals work with nature to enhance quality of life, restore previously damaged ecosystems and build community. Topics include: History of Permaculture, concepts and themes of design, [ in gardening, habitat design, in a variety of climates and microclimates], trees and their relationship to climate and energy, water, soil and earthworks, aquaculture, invisible structures, taking permaculture into the future, and much more. The course culminates in a design project and presentation. Students are welcome to tackle design challenges at Epworth or bring details of their own sites and explore site specific solutions during the design section of the course.

Epworth is the site of a Green Phoenix Permaculture educational initiative and hosted a previous Geoff Lawton and Andrew Jones 72 hour class in the Fall of 2005. Since then, we have planted an en edible forest garden and annual permaculture garden. We were the host of the Northeast Permacu ;ture Spring Gathering in 2006 and plan to have weekend workshops and hands on work weekends this spring [2007]. NOTE: WE ARE SEEKING INTERNS FOR THIS COMING SUMMER.

Registration:

A payment of $300 is needed to secure a place in the course, with the remainder paid by April 1. Cancellations after April 14 will regrettably result in forfeiture of the deposit, as we will need to meet expenses.

NATURAL BUILDING : Green Phoenix and Camp Epworth will be initiating a series of hands on Natural Building workshops, in the process of constructing a strawbale farmhouse. DIRECTIONS:
Camp Epworth is located near both New Paltz and Kingston , N.Y. We are 15 minutes away from the Rosendale bus stop from NYC, and can arrange to pick up students as needed.

Driving from the South:
Take Exit 18, New Paltz, on the NY Thruway/ Rt. 87. After toll booth, you will reach Rt. 299. Go left toward New Paltz. Go down hill into New Paltz and go right onto Rt. 32 North. You will travel about 5 miles, going over 2 metal bridges. After the second bridge, you will turn left at a traffic light onto Rt. 213 West. Take 213W to High Falls . You will cross another metal bridge. After that bridge, you will come to a light. At that corner, turn left onto Lucas Tpke/County Rt. 1. About a mile or so down the road on the left, you will see a big [lighted at night] sign for Epworth Camp and Retreat Center .

Driving from the North:
Take exit 19 from the Thruway/Rt.87. Right after you exit, you will see signs for Rt. 28. Take 28W toward Pine Hill. Almost immediately, you will see signs for Rt. 209. Take 209S toward Ellenville. The road will narrow to a 2-lane road. You will come to Stone Ridge and Marbletown [basically the same place.] You will pass a small shopping area on your left called Stone Ridge Town Center , then come to a light. At the light, turn onto Rt. 213E. Go down the hill toward High Falls and you will reach a light, with High Falls Coop on the corner. Turn right onto Lucas Tpke./County Rt. 1. About a mile or so down the road, you will see Epworth ‘s sign [lighted at night] on the left.
